The Upstream Move

The Upstream Move sends the reader's effort one step back in the chain, off the symptom they have been fighting and onto the thing that keeps producing it.

Definition

What it does

The copy names the thing the reader is currently working on, the ads, the diet, the pain, the stock picks, and demotes it. Then it points one step earlier in the chain to whatever produces that thing, and puts the effort there instead. The usual shapes are a not-this-but-that sentence, an effects versus causes contrast, or an ordering rule saying settle the earlier question before touching the later one. The reader is never told to try harder, only to move where they push.

Why it works

Failed effort gets an explanation that costs the reader nothing in self respect: they were working, just in the wrong place. That keeps the past honest while making the future look cheap, because a small correction early is presented as worth more than any amount of grinding late. It also opens a gap in knowledge. The reader knows the downstream job well and the upstream one hardly at all, so whoever names the earlier cause becomes the obvious person to sell the fix for it.

Examples of The Upstream Move

1970s·Ogilvy & Mather

“The results of your campaign depend less on how your advertising is written than on how your product is positioned.”

An advertising agency tells clients that where a product stands in the market decides campaign results more than the wording of the ads does.

Why it’s this techniqueThe line pulls attention off the lever the reader was about to pull and onto the one sitting behind it: results 'depend less on how your advertising is written than on how your product is positioned.' The comparison is not a verdict on craft, it is a statement about sequence and leverage, which is what makes this a relocation of the decision rather than a critique of execution. The structural tell is the explicit ranking of two levers the reader already owns, with the earlier one rated heavier, so the work the reader planned becomes downstream of work not yet done.

“As usual, most HMO doctors concentrate on treating the effects of joint problems - like pain, stiffness, and lack of mobility - after the problems have already started. But the only way to really help your joints is to address the causes of the problem.”

A joint supplement sales page contrasts mainstream care that manages pain and stiffness with an approach aimed at whatever starts the damage.

Why it’s this techniqueThe move relocates attention from where relief is usually sought to where the trouble begins. It names the standard approach as work on 'the effects of joint problems', listed as 'pain, stiffness, and lack of mobility', stamps that work as late with 'after the problems have already started', then asserts one valid target: 'address the causes of the problem'. The structural tell is the paired position, one layer marked as downstream and consequential, the other marked as the source, with the claim that only work at the source counts. The dismissal of 'most HMO doctors' serves that relocation rather than standing as its own attack.

“you will never be able to have permanent, long lasting results until you first address the issue of why you gained the weight in the first place”

A weight loss sales page argues that dieting cannot hold because it never touches whatever caused the gain to begin with.

Why it’s this techniqueThe copy moves the point of intervention backward in the causal chain: the reader's effort at losing weight is recast as work on a downstream symptom, and the real target becomes 'why you gained the weight in the first place.' The structural tell is the gating conditional, 'you will never be able to have permanent, long lasting results until you first address the issue,' which makes every result the reader wants contingent on solving an earlier problem they were not working on. The inversion 'why do diets fail people' sets up that relocation rather than carrying the argument itself.

“Most people over-eat because they are over-nervous and over-tired. They try to use food as a substitute for the over-drain of energy they are exacting from their body.”

A mail order health book explains overeating as a side effect of drained nervous energy rather than a failure of appetite control, then walks through what changes once the drain stops.

Why it’s this techniqueThe copy refuses the reader's own account of the problem and reassigns the cause one step back: people 'over-eat because they are over-nervous and over-tired', and the eating itself is only 'a substitute for the over-drain of energy'. Appetite becomes a symptom rather than a fault. The structural tell is a causal chain that runs backward from the visible behavior to a hidden source, then forward again, so that stopping the drain settles hunger, nerves and weak will without any of them being tackled head on. Reframing serves that relocation here: the argument turns on where the cause sits, not on how the reader feels about it.

“While many companies are clear on the importance of a seamless customer experience and its impact on growth, the role of the employee experience has yet to be fully quantified”

A business research paper places employee experience ahead of customer experience in the chain that ends in revenue growth.

Why it’s this techniqueThe copy opens on the lever the reader already accepts, 'the importance of a seamless customer experience and its impact on growth', then slides the causal starting point one step back to 'the role of the employee experience', which it frames as 'yet to be fully quantified'. The tell is that the accepted lever is conceded in full rather than attacked, so the reader loses nothing by following the chain backward to a cause sitting ahead of it. Naming the upstream factor as unmeasured, not as unimportant, keeps the reader's existing belief intact while relocating where the work starts.

Boundary Conditions

When it lands

  • The reader has already tried the obvious fix and watched it fail to hold.
  • The link between the two points is short enough to picture in one sentence.
  • The upstream thing is something the reader can actually reach and change.
  • The copy names what the reader is doing now before it names what to do instead.

When it dilutes

  • The cause named is so far back that nothing the reader does can touch it.
  • The relocation is asserted as a slogan with no chain shown between cause and result.
  • The symptom is still urgent and painful, so waving it aside reads as being dismissed.
  • Every seller in the category relocates to the same cause, which turns an insight into a formula.
